"I find real purpose and meaning knowing that I'm doing my absolute best to address the issues before us. I also appreciate the extended families I feel a part of and I love catch ups with my aunties!"
Recent work life
I left school at the end of Year 10 and completed my Trade as a Parks and Gardner. I loved working outdoors with my hands but I also enjoyed studying so I attended TAFE at night and completed some of my favourite courses to date. From there it was University and I didn't stop my Uni studies for 12 years. I was addicted.
Amongst other things I have been a School teacher, TAFE Teacher, Faculty Director, small business owner, and volunteer. I left the Public Service in 2007 and started two companies, John Pearson Consulting, and, Look Now Training and Employment. To this I've recently added another company named Indigenous Workstars. With deep regret for the injustices which exist in Australian history I have a burning passion to address the gap which continues to exist between Australia's First People and their non-Indigenous counterparts.
Travels and adventures
I've been to a few places in Asia and the South Pacific but the highlight for me was meeting my cousins and great uncles, aunts and other relatives when I visited Ireland. I'd like to go back some time soon.
Favorite pastimes
On the weekends, if the weather is good and the water is clear I'm often found snorkelling around Point Perry, Coolum Beach. If the water isn't so clear you might find me fishing from the beach.
What do you enjoy most about your work
The rich culture, sense of humour, and unique approach to life of Australia's First People will always be something I enjoy being around, and in my job I get that every day. And while seeing the disparity that exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians frustrates me deeply, I find real purpose and meaning knowing that I'm doing my absolute best to address the issues before us. I also appreciate the extended families I feel a part of and I love catch ups with my aunties!
